Root Canal Q&A

Why do I need a root canal?

To better understand a root canal procedure, it helps to have a clear picture of what’s happening inside your tooth. Your root canal describes the inner pocket in your tooth that houses your pulp, blood vessels, and nerves. If bacteria gets into this area, the pulp can become infected, which irritates the nerves in your tooth, causing you pain.

Left untreated, an infection in your pulp can spread and form a very painful abscess in your tooth. Worse, the infection can spread into your jawbone.

While root canal procedures are typically associated with pain, in reality, they relieve pain. A root canal clears up the infection, and the pain, all while saving your tooth from extraction.

What happens during a root canal procedure?

During a root canal procedure, Dr. Burnett performs the following:

  • Anesthetizes the area
  • Removes the infected tissue and debris from the canal
  • Scrapes and cleans the inside of your tooth
  • Once clean, he seals the area and fills the canal with a rubber compound
  • Lastly, Dr. Burnett places a crown over the tooth

If there isn’t extensive damage to your tooth, Dr. Burnett may be able to restore your tooth with inlays or fillings. If your tooth is severely compromised, Dr. Burnett may opt for a crown.

How long does the root canal procedure take?

Dr. Burnett performs typical root canals in just an hour.

He has advanced 3D imaging equipment that allows him to target the infection with precision; there’s no guesswork involved. Using an operating microscope, Dr. Burnett can go in and remove the nerve, or nerves, as well as the infected pulp, quickly and efficiently.

Since his office houses a lab that produces advanced dental prosthetics, Dr. Burnett can provide you with a crown on the same day, if needed.
